Yellow-crested cockatoos also breed very slowly and lay eggs only once a year. They can produce only two eggs at a time. Many of them are taken as pets and they may disappear!
People cannot sell the Yellow-crested Cockatoos that were bred domestically. They are very popular and are being bought and sold on the black market—but they are close to being extinct.
Because of their decreasing numbers, these yellow-crested cockatoos are highly priced as much as £650 each. With this at hand, more and more poachers are hunting for the said bird, for a better profit.
The population is at a critical low due to deforestation and poaching and recent studies suggest there may be less than 7,000 individuals remaining.
Customs at Port of Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, Indonesia heard rustling sounds coming from plastic bottles. They were shocked to discover 24 critically endangered cockatoos crammed into empty bottles so they could get through customs.
But what people don’t know is that 40% of these birds die during the illegal smuggling process.
Netizens were equally shocked by how the police handled the situation. They took photos of the birds whilst inside the bottles, instead of setting them free as soon as they were discovered.
